plan a new year trip in India at a time when nobody else is planning
Search for a room or a flight ticket on the internet for Tuesday 3rd of January and you will find some expensive deals.
Change your mind and now search for 7th or 12th of Jan and you will be shocked to see that prices are down.
In fact, they have already reached a rock bottom level. As the month will progress, they will go even down with each day.
Reservations are available in Rails after the 5th of this month and if you are planning to travel by Shatabdi, Rajdhani or Duranto then a last minute ticket or a Tatkal ticket can win you a rebate of 10%.
Aurangabad of Maharashtra, which is famous for the caves of Ajanta and Ellora has lost its peak season completely because of demonetization.
During the last two months of a previous year (2016) 35% to 45% of the hotel rooms remained empty. According to the local tourism bodies things are not going to improve during coming 40 days and room rentals and other rentals can further go down by 50% to 60% as the season for exams will catch up.
Private tour operators in Madhya Pradesh are upbeat because of the winter season. It is expected that during the month of January and February pink winters can roll the carpets for honeymoon couples.
Most of them are designing special New Year packages. Mind you! It is a “Real New Year package” for 2017, where they will slash down the rates for accommodation and other services by 20% to 30% flat. It can go down even further when you might be reading this blog.
Never forget the land of “Kamasutra” Khajuraho is a hot favorite among the foreign tourists. This year, they have a dull season and planning to come up with some discounted rates.
Now Indian tourist can also plan an “erotic gateway” amidst the pink winters and avail international standard amenities to live some exotic fantasies in the land where they worship love in its most sacred form.
Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTCD) is offering free camps to all the visitors when they are visiting places like Panchmari or Orchha etc.MPSTCD launched its camps in 2013; tents are very expensive when you hire them during the peak seasons. However, right now you can avail them free as a part of the main package.
While New Year fever was on, these tents were short in supply, however, now they are available as a promotional package. You might have seen these hiking tents in various movies.
Take my words, they have this power to transport you into a new orbit altogether, provided you a right companion or a group of companions with you.
Search out for a hotel room in the oldest Ski Resort of India, which is Narkanda, MakeMyTrip is giving you a rebate of almost 60% on room tariffs.
Here I would also like to add that the weather forecast of Narkanda suggests that coming 15 days are sunny and good for the skiing adventure. When you will visit Narkanda there are full chances that you will get a ski equipment package dirt cheap because it is an off season for them and demonetization has already left them gasping for money.
Now they want full houses and do not mind while cutting down the gate money. What they were selling during in 2016 was more of a beating retreat package. Now they are actually selling the Real New Year packages.
Five facts to cover five different moods of Indian tourism industryI can produce numerous numbers of deals, where your dream destinations are selling it at dirt-cheap. Think about a destination in Maharashtra; think about a destination 60 kms ahead of Shimla.
Think about a destination in the heart of India, it is just the same everywhere, in fact, while writing this blog, I am also stationed in a resort in Pachmari and continue my journey towards Karnataka.
In the year 2017, they are planning to develop wildlife tourism in Karnataka and I am getting this opportunity to explore the wilder side of yours truly.
So if you have this special interest in Karnataka and you have not made a New Year resolution of staying away from the alcohol, then nightclubs and pubs of Bangalore are waiting for you on this weekend with long happy hours.
It can be an additional treat for you if you are still craving for some more party hang up.
Grab the “Real New Year packages” in 2017
Weather remains the same, the decoration remains the same, and the destination remains the same. What really comes down is the price of your trip. What really comes down is the number of visitors or trouble creators.
If you really wish to welcome 2017 in style than the right now. Allow me to share a before and after postcard of this skiing resort Narkanda with you.
Apart from Skiing Narkanda is very famous for its wilderness and an apple garden inside the valley. It has all the qualities to become a love nest for the “lost in themselves couples” snow capped Ski field and quite apple gardens wait for them throughout the year.
Cozy necessities will replace themselves with unwanted pushes. The dust and the mud-clad boots over the sheets and blankets of ice will become off-putting for you.
Now avail a real New Year package and things will become different. You will find that the privacy and wild of the place is intact and this time you are not paying a bomb for it.
Now you can enjoy the wilderness of the place and search for some forbidden fruits to become an integral part of nature all over again. Less human faces around you naturally bring you closer to your carnal instincts and this is what Narkanda is all about.
This same formula is applicable on every other destination, which is crossing your dreams and generating wanderlust; “The real New Year” is the right time to visit a place or a tourist attraction, off-season tourism eases out a fair deal of stress from you.
From unruly faces to unruly prices, it is the same with the prices of accommodation and other services an unruly pricing regime takes over, New Year eves are the time of year when you end up paying in an unruly fashion.Off season tours or Real new year, packages win the same thing for me and it is my sincere advice to plan trips at a time when nobody else is planning them.
The real new year deals (deals that you can avail in the coming two months of 2017) removes this term unruly from the game completely.
Hunting for a deal in January and February of 2017 then rework on your bargaining skills
We are heading towards a cashless society; we are not heading towards a bargaining less society.
Think about the time bomb ticking on the heads of service providers. I started this blog with a fact that the tourism industry in Aurangabad is slashing down its prices, why they are doing it.
They are doing it because a time bomb is ticking, if your hotel room is empty on 14th of January then it is irreversible, it is a cent percent loss.
The date of 14 January 2017 will never come back to any calendar. If the productivity of a room or a cab is zero on that date, then it will always remain a big zero.
On the other hand, if it is fetching the 30% or 40% of the price then it is a clear-cut gain for the service provider.
When you bargain for any property never, forget this simple principle. This year supply is certainly exceeding demand and this is why you have fair chances to grab some amazing deals.
The deals that they are showing on the face value can be bargained further during this real New Year bargain. Be ready to play this eye staring match with service providers and I am sure that the numbers are favoring you this time.
Bust, recession boom…it’s time for you to Vroom
It is a natural cycle of the events, let us face it, demonetization has busted the peak season of the Indian subcontinent, it is the peak season because the weather is fine and foreigners love to travel India during this period.
As it goes with the theories of economics, once a market gets busted then recession follows, the same thing is happening in the real estate sector of India.
So the demonetization has busted the scene in the tourism industry and now there is a recession, you can pluck out some expensive fruits during the course of this recession.
I would like to compare it with a very unfortunate event, in the year 2015 Paris was gruesomely attacked by terrorists in the month of November.
It was believed that the tourism industry will be the worst sufferer, however, tourism industry bounced back big time because all the tour operators slashed down the prices. Here I would like to mention another fact, the tourism industry of Paris survived mainly because of the domestic tourists, most of the embassies across the world released advisories where they discouraged Paris for tourism for the time being.
The tourism industry of Paris took the note of it; they promoted Paris for the domestic travelers and things picked up within no time.
Paris was attacked on 13th of November 2016 and on 9th of October 2016 Film Star Ranveer Kapoor was launching the music of “Befikre” in the same city. It is important because more than 60 percent of this film was shot in Paris.
I am sharing this one event with you. During the last year Paris was abuzz with many such events, in fact, this year was more happening for them in comparison with the previous years.
Now you might be thinking that why I am comparing demonetization with Paris attacks, please do not get me wrong. The intentions of demonetization are noble. It is only the impact that I am trying to compare.Foreigners have not come to India because of demonetization and now tourism industry wants to cover this deficit with the help of domestic tourists.
It can be your chance to grab some amazing deals, by the time you might be reading this blog, many more deals will on the cards. All you need is to keep your eyes and ears open and yes, just please leave a few pages of your date diary blank.
If I have any rights to predict the future, then I can safely say that first two months of 2017 will bring in a recession for the tourism industry. It is true; however, the rest of the year will be the boom time for them.
I got this anticipation after listening to the plea of my nephew, his piggy bank saved the initial few days of demonetization, now he is a happy kid with three pink notes and lots of plans for his summer holidays.
It is just the same as everybody else. Needless to say, last two months taught us a lot of tricks to survive without cash !!!
The spending capacity of Indians is still the same; it was only a matter of currency notes, which were missing from the deal.
Last year we were blaming global warming because winters were not that cold. Things have changed this year.
Winters in “The real New Year” has added a pink undertone of Romance and currency. Make the best of it and pluck some fruits of recession from some of the hot and happening tourist spots of India.

Indeed, there are no free lunches; however, you can have some discounted brunches very easily. Hottest of the party spots are offering additional discounts if you are paying through digital means. Still, I am aware of 5 best new year destinations in India where you can survive without cash. It means right from a cab driver to a tea vendor all are ready for cashless transactions.
tea vendor all are ready for cashless transactions.
1. Go…Goa…Gone and party full on
Goa is a dream destination for New Year parties in India, in normal conditions, this time of the year is the peak hour for touristic activities, the never-ending party of Goa has certainly earned a great fame for the destination during this part of the year.
The mist of a Goan fenny on the shining sand of Goan beaches can give you the impression that time is at a standstill. There is no point in writing about Goa endlessly, it is only a reminder call that I am sharing with you, and whoever read the bottom line more carefully, the passage is empty. Hot spots are yet to be taken and they are available at a discounted rate.
Why is Goa a great idea for New Year destination in India?
As I already mentioned, when you are in Goa then the time is at a standstill. Now imagine you are already in a mood to celebrate the best part of the year and time is at a standstill. What else is needed, leave one party and join another party, this place is full of options for you.
It is my personal experience that I am sharing with you, after spending a happening night on the Dona Paula beach when I came back to my resort located within a walking distance; I received a complimentary invitation to a pool party on the rooftop. Now this is how you can take a morning shower after a long party when you are in Goa.
Goa always tops the list of new year destinations, however, this year it is topping the list for a different reason, this year it is topping the list because you are moving into Goa during the peak hour and not paying exorbitantly for the best season of the year.
On this 31st, Goa is going to add one more laureate into its crown, now it is going to become the first cashless state of the country. Means you can walk into the market without your purse and purchase everything with the help of your mobile.
2. Brimming with fun in Bangalore
At the turn of this century, Bangalore was a prominent spot on the IT map of India. During the last decade, many NRI’s opted for it as their retirement town. This cosmopolitan population has given a new face to Bangalore and made it an ideal new year destination India.
An average New Year Party in Bangalore will mesmerize you with its youthful charms. Yes, believe me, it is the youthful energy of the city that will take you into a sway and add a new energy to your New Year fun quotient.
I am not saying that the roads of Bangalore become the roads of Las-Vegas during the new year’s eve, still take my words, two years back when I visited Bangalore during the Christmas fever, all those American theme parties enamored me, this year it can be your turn to chase some American Dreams in the party circuit of Bangalore.
Why is Bangalore an ideal new year destination in India?
It is not the party, but it is the after party that makes this city a bit special, the roads of this city celebrate new year even after the regular parties get over.
Hire a vehicle and loiter around on the roads of Bangalore. Feel the pulse of new year riveting the roads of the city. We are sure that you will not have a single dull moment when you are here in Bangalore during the New Year ‘s Eve.
There are full chances that you might feel electrifyingly crazy in Bangalore during this elongated New Year weekend. It can become the craziest time of the year for you where you will love to lose control in true jazzy style.
Bangalore is an IT hub and the IT workers hate cash transaction; they are too lazy for them. The markets of Bangalore acknowledge this fact from last seven to eight years. This is why you will not face the pangs of demonetization here in Bangalore.
3. Disturb the calm of Puducherry on this New Year’s Eve
Puducherry is a very calm place, look at it from a surface; it is a city of scholars and spirituality seekers. However, the city unleashes itself on the eve of New Year with a special charm. A set of beach parties is waiting for you.
If you wish to bid farewell to the ongoing year with slow and romantic music forcing sea waves to dance on it then Puducherry can be your best bet. Things move at a slower pace here, these parties allow you to relax with the sea breeze smooching your face and adding to the intoxication of the night.
Parties are not all about energies, they are not all about jibe, and sometimes it feels great to feel the vibe of what you are and how time is rolling with the pages of calendars in your life.
Puducherry is a sea of spirituality in itself and immersing oneself in the streets of the city at a calendar event can become a heartening yet crazy experience of a lifetime.
Why is Puducherry an ideal new year destination in India?
When you are in Puducherry then a different kind of craziness is waiting for you. Forget about the New year party for a while and think about the first morning of the coming year. Here in Puducherry, you can welcome the first morning of the new year on an energetic and a spiritual note.
At the end of the day, Puducherry is not a city; it is a spiritual healing center for many people, it is the land of great musicians and prolific painters waiting for your arrival.
The way every madness has a method in the similar fashion, sometimes craziness also have calmness. You can search for this crazy calm on the beaches of Puducherry with this new year’s eve party.
Puducherry can be a complete and crazy package for your family because the beach parties of Puducherry are quite famous for their international cuisines.
What really adds to the craziness quotient of the place is the price of liquor, it is very economical and you can taste some of the most exotic wines without pinching your demonetized pocket much. You might find the need of cash at some places in Puducherry, however, Puducherry is also gearing up fast towards becoming a cashless society.
4. Celebrate the last weekend of the year in Mumbai
The year 2016 is ending on the note of a weekend and when it comes to weekend then nothing can beat the charms of Mumbai city. Many colorful new year bashes and theme parties are waiting for you. It will be a waste of time and space if we will get into the details of these parties.
As a traveler, I always figured out that Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city in its true sense. Mumbaikars love to add a variety in their parties and this is why many theme restaurants with some an amazing theme parties are on the cards this year.
Check out the leaflets of various new year bashes like a menu card of any multi cuisine restaurant and I am quite sure that you will be able to figure out an electrifying party out there.
As an ardent traveler, please underline my suggestions very carefully, if you are planning an excursion in and around Mumbai, then please make sure that you are not using busy routes, otherwise, you might end spending an entire day in a traffic jam outside (not inside) the city. It is better to jam in a disc rather than Jamming out with honking cars and other vehicles.
This year Mumbai is not a crazy idea, it is a sensible idea?
In the beginning of this compilation, I pointed out the price factors attached to your travel plans. Mumbai certainly is a nice party destination; however, at this part of the year, party joints become expensive.
Big parties and bashes that are loaded with Bollywood stars and other performers, demands an exorbitant price. Things are much easier this year, just hang around in the right places and you might get a ticket to Bollywood at a much cheaper rate.
They say that the lady of fortunes smiles on various people in Mumbai. This year your chances are bright in Mumbai & prices are low.
Mumbai is also a very nice place for getting rid of party hangovers. Yes, I am right about it, most of the big hotels and regular hotels throw sunday brunches. Since this time the new year is starting on a lazy sunday, you can grab a bite in these brunches and bid goodbye to the party hangovers with aristocratic ease.
The fourth day after the demonetization, the queues outside the ATM’s of Mumbai were substantially lower. The reason was very simple, people, cab drivers, vegetable vendors; all were well equipped with PayTm and other means of cashless transactions. Unlike New Delhi, Mumbai recovered very rapidly from the jolt of demonetization. What else we can say about the cashless status of Mumbai.
5. Challenge the silence of night and bid good-bye to all your blues in a desert camp at Jodhpur or Jaisalmer
If you are someone who is into this culture of the limitless party, then the New Year eve can bring in a new challenge for you. Yes, the challenge to beat the wilderness and the silence of the night, here I am talking about desert camps. These desert camps are also known as lover’s nest amidst the deserts.
If the party animal in you wants something different, then desert camps of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and many other places in Rajasthan are calling you. In the wake of demonetization this year, you can join the membership of a club, which was out of your reach in the past. If you find the noise of the city a little too bothering, if you feel suffocated inside all those discs, which are cramped places, smelling of nicotine and alcohol then a desert camp party can be your best resort.
After various rulings of the honorable high court, many happening party zones of big cities have become restricted places. A desert camp is a place that does not follow any clock, the sound of music reverberates in the cities and become noise for many, however, the cool breeze of deserts welcome these sounds all the time. The music becomes shepherds’ songs for the people living at far off places in deserts.
Desert camp new year party is a crazy and path breaking idea.
I would like to share a routine practice of news channels and other media houses. Prior to new year eve, they promote various destinations big time and right after the new year’s eve you can hear all sorts of horrendous stories of overcrowded places.
When you pick something like a desert camp then it is an offbeat choice by all possible standards. It is a kind of out of the box thinking from your part and it is going to pay off in the terms of a quality party with classy companions.
Never forget that your party mates are going to be the first few faces that you are going to see with the first dawn of 2017. Now think about sharing it with some classy and refined people because you are in desert camp.
You are required to buy a desert camp package, which will cover everything, like food, beverages, arrival, departure etc. It is a cashless bubble where you are moving in and in this particular case; you are paying everything in advance so there is a need to worry about a cash crunch.
On a parting note, I would like to share a few words from the Facebook post of one my friend, she is an event manager, she wrote, “it is a currency note that lost its sheen, money in other forms still, holds its value.”
If you wish to realize your craziest new year fantasies, then abide by this sensible wisdom and grab this sweet fruit of demonetization for a crazy syrup of fun and festivity.
If you got any other best New Year destinations in India in your mind, then do let me know and share your valuable thoughts with the world. India, to the tourists is a mystic place and more than a land of farmers, tigers, elephants, snakes, holy men and rituals. An estimated 15 million tourists come to India every year for various purposes. Before going to a new place, as a tourist, it is always better to know the history and culture of people. There are, of course, youtube videos about every country, but how about recommended books to read while traveling around India, written by its native writers which can give you a better insight into the habits of people? If you are planning a visit to India or already in India, listed below are some of the books which will assist you in learning the history, culture and habits of Indian people. Many of the books have been written by distinguished authors and some have won international awards.
By E. M. Forster
Passage to India has made the first spot of recommended book while traveling around India. It has won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction as well the Femina Vie Heureuse in 1925. It was made into a popular and acclaimed film of the same name by David Lean in 1984. The movie was selected for 11 nominations in the Academy Awards. In addition, the novel also finds a place in the 100 esteemed works of English Literature in the 20th century.
The time is Pre-Independence India (1920s). India was then ruled by the British, and the story revolves around the friendship between a British and an Indian and the tumultuous times the relationship goes through. The city mentioned in the novel is Chandrapore, located on the Ganges and famous for its Marabar caves. In the novel, personal relationships and colonialism stand opposite to each other and we are sure that the novel will give you a better information on India seen through the eyes of a foreigner.
By Salman Rushdie
Salman Rushdie is at his best in depicting fantasy along with real events in this novel published in 1981. The story is about Saleem Sinai who is one among the 1001 children born when Indian attained Independence. All the children have been blessed with special gifts and Sinai has a telepathy link with each of them. I would definitely recommend this book , once to read for fellow traveler.
This novel has the rare distinction of winning both the Booker Prize and James Tait Black Memorial Prize in the same year (1981). Other awards followed, such as the English-Speaking Union Literary Award in the same year. It again gained a feather in the cap when it won the “Booker of Bookers” Prize in 1993 as well as 2008 when the 25th and the40th anniversary of Booker were celebrated. It also finds a mention in the Great Books of the 20th Century (Penguin Books).
From 1947 to 1981, the book tells us to the first three decades after India (and some years before) achieved freedom, which involves the partition tragedy, linguistic battles among States, the formation of Bangladesh, religious divisions told through the eyes of the main protagonist Saleem Sinai. It is this gift that is not only special but also becomes a burden to the main character. Every act of Sinai is linked to the events which shape the newborn India, straight out of the iron clutches of the British Empire. The style with which the story has been written shows Rushdie as a master genius with words and a person who has a rare sense of humor.
By R.K. Narayan
This book is considered one of the great mythological epics by Indians. As a tourist, you will be given information on demons, kings, places other than Mother Earth, devotion, faith, cruelty, lust, war, human relationship conflicts, curse, strategy in this masterpiece.
The real book was written by Sage Valmiki in 4th Century BC, and you can find various versions in Indian native languages. But this book (published in 1973) is adapted from the 11th century Tamil poet known as Kamban and R K Narayan keeps the reader mesmerized with a language of his own.
The Ramayana has as its focus, Rama the avatar of Lord Vishnu, the reason he was born, his marriage, his banishment from the kingdom, the kidnapping of his consort Sita by the Demon King Ravan and the war to free her. The language in the book is very simple and can be understood by children – this book holds its own when compared to the great stories of Greek and biblical mythology.
If you are a religious or spiritual person. Would like to know more about Hinduism then I would highly recommend this book to read.
By Rudyard Kipling
Have you heard about The Jungle Book? The same author by name Rudyard Kipling has also written this novel, Kim. The book gives a thrilling description of India, its population, the market of the old times and ancient road along with superstitions surrounding the then society.
The main character is Kim, a white boy who is on the path to adulthood and the friendship he has with a priest, the Lama. The time is set in the last years of the 19th century and the reader is given details about a separate world of adventure. Indian was in the hold of British Empire; Kim has to make a decision between his race and his friend. The book was published by Macmillan in 1901.
The term “Great Game” described in this novel became world famous as the book describes the political unrest of the same time between Britain and Russia. In 1998, the novel found a place on the list of 100 best English speaking novels of the 20th century (ranking by Modern Library).
By Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre
As the name suggests, the non-fiction book describes the events that happened as a result of India gaining freedom. The book is considered authentic as many of the political leaders of the same time gave their personal comments and official documents were also taken into consideration.
The book gives a description of the Kings who were ruling some of the States, their lavish lifestyles, a partition of the country into India and Pakistan based on religion and the unwanted bloodshed events.
The flow of words makes the reader realize that riots or communal tension has very little to do with caste or religion and it is based only on a personal vendetta. The book has been written by a foreigner, and so favoritism is out of the question and the words have been sketched through the eyes of an Imperialist. The events fold first with Lord Mountbatten appointed as Viceroy of British India (last to be precise) and conclude with the death of the Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. This book
This book is one of the books which can give you the glimpse of the partition of India and Independence of India then one should definitely read this book.
By Jawahar Lal Nehru
The author needs no mention, as he was the First Prime Minister of Independent India and was affectionately called as “Nehru Chacha” by children.
This book was written during the years he was imprisoned for participating in the struggle for freedom.
The years were 1942 to 1946 and the solitude gave him more time to write on the history of the country he loved till his last breath.
The book starts from the ancient ages; you find mention of the Vedas, books of old times, the folklore of bravery and ends with the rule of British Empire. You can find glimpses and mentions of ancient history, philosophy, culture in this book. It can be, no doubt, called as a mirror of Indian history. The book was made into a 53 episode serial ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ by the popular director, Shyam Benegal for Doordarshan, the national television channel in 1988.
I would highly recommend this book to all traveler, to know about Indian history and its glory in past.
By Amitav Ghosh
This book earned its author, Amitav Ghosh, the Sahitya Akademi Award for English as well the Ananda Puraskar in the year 1989.
Set in the 1960s in Calcutta, the story revolves around two families and the twists their lives take during the historical events of India.
The beauty of this novel is that it makes the readers have assumptions, let them rewind memories of historic events and give glimpses of how political changes can affect personal lives.
You can find mention of Partition of India, communal riots in the year 1963 to 1964, Second World War and the Swadeshi movement.
By Suketu Mehta
Bombay, the metropolis has always attracted tourists from times immemorial.
The non-fiction novel authored by Suketu Mehta was nominated for the final round of Pulitzer Prize (2005).
It also won other awards, like the Kiriyama Prize, 2005 and Vodafone Crossword Book Award.
As you read the story, you feel that the words and stories can be picked only by a person who has knowledge about Bombay as the palm of his hand.
The information is given from different angles, right from the criminal activities of an underworld, religions in Hindu and Muslim gangs, stories of persons who have migrated from the villages for a better livelihood and end up in slums.
By Shashi Tharoor
When the book first made its way to the public and critics, it was hailed as a remarkable masterpiece. To describe properly, “a real tour de force” were the words used by Britain’s Financial Times; it was recommended by the Indian Express for “every sane Indian” to have a copy.
The Master of English words in India, Khushwant Singh praised it as “perhaps the best work of fiction written by an Indian in recent years”.
This book has been transferred into many foreign languages – Spanish, German, Italian and French. In native languages, it has made its way to Malayalam, Bengali and Marathi.
A wonderful novel – it combines the old famous epic Mahabharata with the times of Indian Freedom Movement and the next thirty years after Independence.
Similar to the struggle between Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata, the author Shashi Tharoor transforms the story of democracy in the country in the form of a struggle amidst individuals and groups related to their loyalty and faith.
The novel also takes a shot on famous works written about India by reputed authors such as E M Forster and Rudyard Kipling.
There are also best novel books which can enchant you from the start to the end, but the reason here is to recommend books which can help you get an understanding of history and culture. The best information about the culture of a place and a smart mind can make your journey the happiest in the world. So All The Best!
